1,871 foreign tourists paid visit to Shwedagon Pagoda in July

A total of 1,121 male and 750 female foreign tourists, totalling 1,871 visited the Shwedagon Pagoda in July, according to the pagoda board of trustees. Most of them came from Asia.
At the same time, 10,834 members of the Sangha, 7,340 nuns, 504,414 men and 591,587 women as local travellers also visited the pagoda.
During the COVID-19, the board of the pagoda suspended the visits of local and foreign travellers. But, the visit of travellers to the pagoda was allowed from 6 am to 6 pm as of 17 April 2021. Due to increasing number of travellers, the authorities extended the travel period from 5 am to 6 pm as from 30 October 2021. Starting from 27 November, the travel time of the pagoda was extended from 5 am to 7 pm on Saturday and Sunday as well as significant days. On 26 March 2022, the visit to the pagoda for convenience of local travellers increased from 5 am to 8 pm.
More than 1.28 million local travellers including some 1,000 foreigners paid visit to the pagoda in May.—TWA/GNLM
