More than 2,000 pre-1995 model buses, trucks and cars used for public transit have been retired by the Road Transport Administration Department (RTAD) of Yangon Region, according a report in yesterday’s Myawady Daily newspaper.
Yangon has introduced thousands of new Chinese-made buses to enhance service and reduce traffic congestion. The retirement of older transit vehicles is part of the government’s ongoing transit reforms. For safety and environmental reasons, buses older than 1995 will be prohibited.
The decommissioning process began in October 2016 with a total of 3,117 buses targeted by the program, according to a transport registration list sent by Yangon Region Transport Authority to the RTAD.
The decommissioned vehicles include 1,000 Toyota Dyna vehicles, 700 city buses, 300 BM buses, 140 mini-buses and 10 Pick Up Cars.
