Yangon and Ayeyawady lead lobster purchases from Taungup

Lobsters from Taungup township, Rakhine state, are mainly ordered from hotels in Yangon and some beaches in Ayeyawady region, according to market inquiries.
Recently, lobster prices have been falling, and in Taungup township, lobsters have become abundant since last August.
“At the moment, the price of lobster is falling. It’s convenient to buy and sell. Hotels use it a lot. Some families also have it. Other stores don’t use it. Since August, lobster has become a little more abundant, and its price dropped a little. Mandalay doesn’t consume lobster much. Hotels in Yangon use it, so we send it mostly to Yangon. There are orders from hotels in Chaungtha and Ngwehsaung. The lobster is either natural or farmed. After September, in post-rainy season, the price may be better, but now the price is falling,” said Ma San San Oo from a lobster business in Taungup township.
Lobsters had been scarce recently, she added. “During the last six months, we had not caught lobsters. The lobsters reappeared just two months ago. One reason is that farms cannot produce lobsters. Some buy live lobsters,” the lobster businesswoman said. — Thit Taw/ZN/ED
