Surplus production in its original market has led chayote wholesale prices to fall recently.
Chayote is consumed chiefly and cooked in different recipes in Myanmar.
“Increased production and decline in the Yangon market cause the wholesale price to fall here. Yangon is the main market, but competition is high there, so we have to reduce the price. It is the peak season of chayote in Aungban, followed by Ywangan, Pindaya, and Pinlaung,” said a chayote trader from Aungban.
The chayote market often changes, and the price has recently declined.
“Price varies on a daily basis. It has been about three days, and the chayote price has fallen. We transport it to Yangon’s Thiri Mingala Market and Mandalay, which are our main destinations. Compared to previous years, chayote price seems better for farmers,” he said. — Thit Taw/ZS/ED
