The Yangon Region Public Transport Committee (YRTC) has decided to include another action, revoking the driver’s licence issued by the Road Transport Administration Department for a certain period, in addition to YBS driver smart card cancellation for traffic rule violations.
An awareness seminar 1/2024 was held on 19 September at the YRTC head office training hall for YBS drivers who violated the rules more than three times by driving with the side door open and overtaking. Vice-Chairperson U Chit Ko Ko delivered an opening remark, which was attended by the joint secretary, members of the YRTC, and 100 YBS drivers who broke the rules.
As there are 21 YBS companies under the management of YRTC, and 131 bus lines commute about 1.4 million passengers daily by 4,000 buses out of 5,500 registered buses, the safety of about 400 passengers in each ply is in the hands of each YBS driver, he said.
Therefore, the YRTC will not tolerate YBS vehicles overtaking each other, reverse driving, driving through red lights and overspeeding. In addition to cancelling the driver’s smart card from YRTC for such violations, the Yangon Region Traffic Safety Council has decided to take action to revoke the driver’s licence by setting a time.
The YRTC monitoring and action-taking measures are based soundly on the evidence obtained by high-tech telematics devices from the Traffic Control Centre, CCTV records, and drug abuse tests. When applying for a YBS driving license, those who have attended the driver’s training course are allowed to drive only after passing the drug test. — MT/ZN/Ed
