The 36th ASEAN Heads of Specialist Anti-Trafficking Unit-HSU Meeting was held yesterday morning through videoconferencing in Nay Pyi Taw and attended by Representatives led by Commander of the Anti-Trafficking Police Force of the Myanmar Police Force Police Brig-Gen Myint Htoo, Task Force Leaders and Representatives from Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Viet Nam, and Representatives from the ASEAN Secretariat.
In explaining Myanmar’s anti-trafficking efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic at the meeting, Police Brig-Gen Myint Htoo said the Anti-Trafficking Law enacted in 2005, which is the most important part of the policy and cooperation, was amended in consultation with relevant government departments and organizations and local and international legal experts to bring it in line with the modern system and international standards. A new anti-trafficking law was enacted on 16 June this year to effectively prosecute child trafficking.
The COMMIT MOU was reviewed and revised at the national level, and the COMMIT National Mechanism / Procedure (NRM) for the extradition of victims of trafficking was approved on 14 December 2021 and published on 14 February this year.
The ASEAN member states then briefed each other on their efforts to combat human trafficking, HSU Action Plan (2022-2023) (Draft). They also discussed the hosting of the 37th Meeting of ASEAN Heads of Specialist Anti-Trafficking Unit-HSU Meeting by Indonesia, and the Chairman made concluding remarks.—MNA
