Brunei Darussalam hosted the 41st Meeting of The ASEAN Ministers on Agriculture and Forestry (41st AMAF), the 19th AMAF Plus Three and the 5th ASEAN-India Ministerial Meeting on Agriculture and Forestry (5th AIMMAF) in its capital Bandar Seri Begawan on 15 and 16 October.
Union Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation Dr Aung Thu attended these meetings which took place at the Empire Hotel in the capital. The opening ceremonies of the meetings on 15 October were attended by the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah Ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, for the welcoming speech.
The 41st AMAF reviewed the completions on the priority projects for ASEAN Economic Community, which were adopted in the 34th ASEAN Summit and the 51st ASEAN Economic Ministers Meeting, the progress made in implementing food security, agriculture and forestry of ASEAN countries, and preparations for the 19th AMAF Plus Three and the 5th AIMMAF.
The 41st AMAF also approved the 31 targeted plans in 2019, including norms food safety, agriculture and forestry, guidelines for good manufacturing practices in agriculture and livestock, and the rules for organic agriculture in ASEAN countries.
The Union Minister also signed the MOU on ASEAN Cooperation in Agriculture and Forest Products Promotion Scheme (2019-2024) that aims to promote twelve-products in the international markets.
The Union Minister and party also separately met with the Director General of the Philippines-based International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and the Vice Chairman of the US-ASEAN Business Council.
On 16 October, Union Minister Dr Aung Thu attended the 19th AMAF Plus Three to discuss its Cooperation Strategy (APTCS) 2016-2025, and approved its joint statement.
In the afternoon, the Union Minister and the ministers from participant countries called in on the Sultan of Brunei at his presidential palace.
In that afternoon, the Union Minister attended 5th AIMMAF and discussed the progress made in the implementation of the ASEAN-India Plan of Action (2016-2020), priority projects for 2019-2020, and approved the meeting’s joint statement.
Thy also enjoyed dinner hosted by the Minster for Primary Resources and Tourism Dato Ali bin Apong in the evening.
The Union Minister and party arrived back to Yangon yesterday afternoon.—MNA
