69th Anniversary of Independence Day events to be held in Maungtaw

A coordination meeting on organising funfairs to commorate the 69th Anniversary of Independence Day in Maungtaw was held yesterday afternoon.
“Independence Day ceremonies are held on a grand scale across the country and we will also organise the ceremony in accordance with the tradition of our country and we are holding meetings with departmental officials and ward and village administrators,” said Township Administrator U Hla Myint.
The head of the District Police also promised to tighten security in the district. “We have arranged to deploy about 500 members of the security force for twenty-four hours. They will be deployed at sports events and ceremonies. We have taken special care for night events,” the Maungtaw District Police Commissioner said.
Security for the ceremony will be provided by the local police, the district police, border guards and their alliance forces, according to a Maungtaw township police officer.
Sports competitions commemorating the event will start today and will include Sepaktakraw, tennis, tug of war, and the oil pole climbing competitions, in addition to other sports.
Prizes worth up to Ks50,000 will be awarded to winners of the Sepaktakraw competitions.
The current situation in Maungtaw has been stable and peaceful, with restaurants crowded with patrons starting at about 6pm each evening. The Maungtaw area was under tight security following the 9 Octoberattacks on several border guard outposts. — Zin Oo (Myanma Alin)
