6th Myanmar-India bilateral meeting on drug control held

The 6th Myanmar-India Bilateral Meeting on Drug Control was hosted by India yesterday morning and was attended by the delegation led by Joint-Secretary of the Central Committee Drug Abuse Control, Commander of the Drug Enforcement Police Force, Police Brig-Gen Win Naing through video conferencing in Nay Pyi Taw.
At the meeting, Police Brig-Gen Win Naing, who led the Myanmar delegation, said that the COVID-19 crisis does not impact the regional drug trade and production. The drug problem is a global problem and all countries are working to eradicate it in various ways; The dangers of drugs affect society and community health; It has a huge impact on the regional economy and is a major obstacle to the functioning of the government and the development of the country. It is also a long-term task for all countries to work together; he said.
He added that the production of synthetic drugs in the region continues to rise due to the illegal entry of precursor chemicals used in drug production. In addition to the emergence of new, more cost-effective and high-quality man-made medicines, the drug problem continues to grow due to the involvement of drug cartels outside the region, market expansion, and changes in the pattern of transportation, with the advancement of technology.
To solve the drug problem, it is necessary to prioritize the control of precursor chemicals which is essential in drug production, he highlighted. He said Myanmar will enhance its cooperation with the neighbouring countries to control precursors.
The meeting was attended by the Indian delegation led by Director-General Mr Satya Narayan Pradhan of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB). At the meeting, the two sides discussed information exchange issues related to local heroin trafficking, factories producing drugs and psychotropic drugs and secret laboratories, trafficking in methamphetamine, illegal cultivation of opium and marijuana in border areas, and issues related to Myanmar hosting the 7th meeting. — MNA
