A child has been abandoned by mother, who seems suffering from mild mental illness, at Kyaikto township hospital and special care has been provided but no contact from family has been received, said the hospital.

A pregnant woman who has symptoms of mental illness delivered a baby girl at the hospital on 9 January this year and left the baby by saying she would bring relatives from Katite village in Paung township.

“Baby Swe Nyein who was abandoned by her mother is now 14 days old. The baby born prematurely with a low birth weight has been in pretty good health as a result of the hospital’s special care. She smiles at everyone she sees. The parents and relatives haven’t made contact, so far,” Kyaikto township hospital wrote on its social media page on 23 January.

The baby’s mother was found lying on the street in front of Shwehinthar Hotel located in Kyaikto and a local parahita group sent her to the hospital. She called herself Daw Swe Nyein and told that she had been displaced from her native, Kanyutkwin, Bago Region, was 29 years old and had no husband, and didn’t bring National Registration Card.

The baby girl was born with a low birth weight and is still under hospitalization, said the hospital. But her health has improved relatively now due to with the special care provided by the hospital, it added.

If the parents and relatives don’t contact and the baby’s health becomes normal, the hospital would make a plan to seek a better future for her in negotiation with respective authority, said the hospital.

The hospital has kept systematically the public contributions for the cost of baby’s formula milk.
