About 3 million passengers expected to take circular train in Yangon in 2020

Myanma Railways (MR) plans to increase the number of riders of the circular train in Yangon up to about three million by 2020. Currently, MR is cooperating with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to promote the use of the circular trains, which is currently used by only 4 per cent of Yangon dwellers.
To attract more riders, Myanma Railways will raise the speed from 20 kmph to 40 kmph, with an aim to save the passengers’ precious time. To be able to run the circular trains at a higher speed, MR will buy new coaches and upgrade the railroad tracks with the assistance of JICA.
The circular trains will run for only 1 hour and 50 minutes instead of three hours. Moreover, MR has invited tenders for the upgrading of the Shwedagon Pagoda Road- Insein and Danyingon- Pazundaung railroad tracks.
After the announcement that tenders would be invited for 10 projects, including the upgrading of the Yangon circular railway in April, tender Nos. MR/YCR/UGCP 101 (T) 2017-2018 and MR/YCR/UGCP 102(T) were invited.
The MR has been upgrading railway stations and platforms with government budgets and US$207million loans from Japan.

Some circular train stations to be closed in Yangon
Some circular train stations which are rarely used by passengers in the Yangon region will be closed after a survey has been conducted, it is learnt.
Some circular train stations have to be shut down in order to reduce travelling time. The distance between some railway stations is only half a mile, officials said. The MR will run the circular trains at a much faster speed in 2020.
Upon completion of the upgrade, MR will buy new train coaches. For safe driving, MR is constructing brick walls, which will be completed no later than 2022. MR has being upgrading the circular railway lines to increase the number of circular train commuters to reduce traffic congestion.—200
