Accidents on Yangon-Mandalay highway claim 5 lives in Feb

Five persons were killed and 26 others injured in road mishaps on the Yangon-Mandalay highway in February, according to the highway traffic police.
“There were 27 traffic accidents on the highway. The accidents claimed the lives of five males and left 26 persons injured, including six females and 20 males. Most of the road accidents in February involved careless driving and tyre bursts,” said an official of the highway traffic police.
The accidents were also attributed to over-speeding, defective vehicles, and inclement weather.
In January, a total of 25 accidents were reported on the highway. Within the first two months of this year, road mishaps have resulted in 12 deaths and left 41 persons injured.
Last year, there were 524 accidents on the Yangon-Mandalay highway, which left 108 dead and 1,019 injured.
In 2019, the monthly average for accidents was 43. The monthly traffic-related deaths were 12, while the monthly traffic-related injuries totaled 84.
To reduce road mishaps, the traffic police are conducting regular awareness talks and distributing educational pamphlets. The traffic police have filed charges against suspected reckless drivers under Sections 279, 337, 338, and 304 (A) of the Penal Code. —Aye Maung (Translated by Hay Mar)
