it is necessary to honour the efforts and sports spirit as well as victories of Myanmar athletes who deservedly secured a national level position in the SEA Games, said Chairman of the State Administration Council Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing at the ceremony to honour victorious athletes for winning medals in the XXXI SEA Games at the Wunna Theikdi Sports Complex (B) in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday morning.
In his address, the Senior General said it can be seen that athletes compete in the local sports contests, and regional and international sports competitions by showing their excellent skills in order to upgrade the health and fitness of the people and sports standards of the country.
In the XXXI SEA Games, 293 athletes from Myanmar in addition to 97 coaches and administrative officials competed in 20 sports events with their earnest efforts and bagged nine gold, 18 silver and 35 bronze medals, totalling 62, securing the seventh position among 11 contending countries.
The Senior General was pleased for victorious athletes in their competitions with honesty to securing the medals for the State by bringing honour to the State. But, the Senior General recounted his review that in his enjoying the sports competitions, Myanmar athletes were weak in stamina, fitness and techniques in some sports. They needed to pour out their strength and capability in the competitions. Hence, it is necessary to analyze the root cause of less development as expected.
The Senior General noted that sports should not be complicated by business and politics. The competitions representing the country were at the different levels of the Olympics. All athletes need to set the aims to march towards the Asian Games as well as the global level. The government is ready to encourage them. All qualified athletes must have the spirit to represent the State in their competitions to uplift the prestige of the State.
Hence, it is necessary to honour the efforts and sports spirit as well as the victories of Myanmar athletes who deservedly secured the national level positions in the SEA Games.
The victorious athletes, coaches and administrative teams will be awarded K1,327 million as rewards in line with the announcement for awarding in advance. As athletes made vigorous efforts for honouring the State, the government will provide necessary assistance to them.
The Senior General urged them to strive for winning greater victory in coming international competitions with diligence, perseverance, efforts, obedience to disciplines and sports spirit.
The victorious athletes and all officials are honoured and recorded for their efforts in uplifting the prestige of the State in winning victories in the SEA Games. The athletes are urged to compete in the XXXII SEA Games to be held in Cambodia from 5 to 17 May 2023 with greater efforts and sports spirit.
Union Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs U Min Thein Zan reported to the Senior General on competitions in the XXXI SAE Games.
The Senior General presented cash awards to gold medallists in the Vovinam, Sepak Takraw, Wushu, Kurash, Body-building, Petanque, billiards and snooker sports events.
The Vice-Chairman of the SAC Deputy Prime Minister also presented cash awards to silver medallists in the canoeing and kayak, billiards and snooker, shooting and Wushu sports events.
The SAC members, Union ministers, the Commander-in-Chief (Navy), the Commander-in-Chief (Air) and senior military officers handed silver and bronze medallists, coaches and administrative officials in the respective sports.
On behalf of the victorious athletes, Vovinam athlete Ma May Honey Aung Lwin spoke words of thanks. Then, the Senior General and party gave a tea party to victorious athletes and coaches in their honour.
As part of encouraging the athletes, the government presented K200,000 and US$200 each to athletes, K100,000 and US$100 each to coaches at the handing over ceremony of the flag to ensure the victory. During the SEA Games, gold medallists were awarded US$3,000, silver medallists US$2,000, bronze medalists US$1,000 in the singles events and US$1,000 for gold medallists, US$750 for silver medallists and US$500 for bronze medallists in the team-wise events and the Myanmar national women’s football team US$ 100,000 for its capability to compete in the semifinal match.—MNA
