Speaker of Amyotha Hluttaw U Khin Aung Myint attended the World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day ceremony in Yamethin, Mandalay Region, on Friday and made a speech.
After taking salute from 460 members of Red Cross societies in Yamethin and Pyawbwe, the speaker said that Myanmar Red Cross Society was founded as an affiliation of India Red Cross Society in 1920 and it was recognized by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in 1939. The speaker added that Myanmar Red Cross Society Act was enacted in 1959 and the society has been carrying out its activities widely since then, nurturing a number of outstanding members including Sai Aung Hlaing Myint, who won Henry Dunant Award in 1977 at the age of 21 and U Moe Kyaw Than and others who helped people in Laukkai in recently fighting.
In conclusion, the speaker urged the members of the Red Cross societies in the two townships to help all those who need it regardless of race, religion and social status at any time and any place.
Then, the speaker watch the skill demonstration of members of the societies and formally opened the building of Red Cross Supervisory Committee in Yamethin.
After viewing round the new building, the speaker urged members of Red Cross societies to extensively carry out their activities in the entire district.
