ASEAN legal cooperation progress: Initiatives to enhance conflict resolution

ASEAN Senior Law Officials Meeting (ASLOM) incumbent chairperson, Deputy Minister for Ministry of Legal Affairs Deputy Attorney-General Dr Htein Lin Oo attended the 16th Coordinating Conference for ASEAN Political-Security Community (APSC) at the ASEAN Secretary-General Office in Jakarta, Indonesia, on 9 May.
The deputy attorney-general said that attendants of the 12th ASEAN Legal Ministers’ Meeting and 22nd ASEAN Senior Law Officials Meeting had submitted some proposals regarding areas in which member countries could potentially cooperate.
Based on their proposals, the ASEAN Secretariat and the ASEAN Law Association have worked together to initiate conflict-resolving courses to settle problems between investors and invested countries. Discussions to impose better conflict-resolving methods are expected within this year.
The draft of the ASEAN agreement on extradition is also anticipated to be approved this year. It will pave the way for establishing a framework to combat transnational crimes and facilitate legal collaboration among ASEAN member states.
Additionally, representatives from each member state and officials from the ASEAN Secretariat discussed the implementation of the APSC roadmap and other expectations regarding the ASEAN community. — MNA/NT
