A coordination meeting of high-level officials for discussing ASEAN cooperation in receiving returnees in Rakhine State was held between the office of the ASEAN Secretary-General and the Myanmar Government at the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement yesterday.
In this meeting, Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Dr. Win Myat Aye said Myanmar was consistently striving for the stability and development of Rakhine State. The Advisory Commission on Rakhine State has already been formed and that they were doing their best for implementation of the suggestions, he said. He expressed his wish for the undertakings to be objective, and added that this cooperation would support the activities of the trilateral MoU signed between the Myanmar Government, the Red Cross, UNDP and UNHCR.
The Union Minister also said this undertaking would support the implementation of the agreements between Myanmar and Bangladesh. He said it is an important collaboration for not only countries in the region but also for the international community because it would be an example of cooperation with ASEAN countries.
Secretary-General of ASEAN Mr. Lim Jock Hoi also delivered his remarks and said he was very glad for the trust placed on ASEAN by the Myanmar government. He said needs assessments based on the ASEAN-Emergency Response and Assessment Team (ASEAN-ERAT) Guidelines would be conducted in accordance with the host country’s rules and regulations, prioritized processes, and protocols.
Next, Executive Director of AHA Centre, Ms. Adelina Kamel, explained about the duties of the needs assessment team and the assistant director from the ASEAN Secretary-General’s office explained on ASEAN ERAT’s local training program. Attendees gave advice and discussed based on the explanations given.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Maj-Gen Aung Thu, Deputy Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement U Soe Aung, representatives from Rakhine State Government and officials.— MNA (Translated by Myat Thandar Aung)
