Avocado from southern Shan State enters market at K3,000-K5,000 per kg

Avocados from the southern Shan State flowed into the markets with K3,000-K5,000 per kilogramme, according to the Kanbawza Trade Centre.
In addition to the avocado varieties that originated in the townships of southern Shan State, the local farmers cultivated Hass, Bacon, Fuerte, Lamb Hass, Reed and Zutano avocado varieties imported by California, the US through grafting.
There are approximately 10,000-15,000 acres of avocado plantations in the country and about 500 to 1,000 tonnes were produced this year.
At present, Hass avocado grown through grafting is harvested. Public companies, organizations and farm owners tag brand labels and make good packaging. They send them to Yangon, Mandalay and other big cities after they connect with the customers through digital marketing. The avocado fetches K3,000-K5,000 per kilogramme depending on flaws and size.
Local avocados are regularly produced and exported to Thailand through Tachilek commodity centre. They are distributed to the domestic markets through Aungban depots and the trade centres in Taunggyi. The prices of avocados are K500-K1,000 per viss.
Growers from southern Shan State ramp up avocados production year over year. Additionally, Myanmar Avocado Producers and Exporters Association led the partner institutions to earn the Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) certificate and Global GAP certificate to attract more foreign buyers.
Moreover, through the assistance of the development partner institutions, Myanmar’s avocado was showcased at the Thai FEX expo. Myanmar Avocado Producers and Exporters Association managed to showcase Myanmar’s avocado at the SIAL France to penetrate the European market. The public company in Shan State also displayed Myanmar’s avocado at the third Myanmar Lashio-China Lincang Border Economic and Trade Fair held online with an aim to introduce Myanmar’s avocado. The association is also making efforts to participate in Asia Fruit Logistics 2022 to explore markets, according to the Kanbawza Trade Centre.
Myanmar conveyed 2,383.740 tonnes of avocado worth US$0.562 million to foreign trade partners by sea or through land borders in the 2020-2021 Financial Year, mostly to Thailand via the Tachilek border trade post, the trade data indicated. – NN/GNLM
