Betel plantations thriving in Pobbathiri Tsp

Betel plantations are thriving in villages of Thityagon village-tract in Pobbathiri Township.
Local farmers had been planting Shwedah and Yangon strains of betel but, after finding them unsuitable for the weather in the region, switched to the Monywa Muyin strain. The farmers spent about K2 million growing 1,000 betel plants per farm.  Thanks to their efforts, the betel farms produce more than 48 kilos of betel leaves, fetching K 6,000 per 1.6 kilos.
Local farmers use natural fertilizers and cow manure for their farms, helping sellers of these products also earn an income.–Shwe Ye Yint
