Black gram prices soar above K1 mln per tonne

Since 2017, Myanmar has to export black gram and pigeon peas under the quota system and limited period as per India’s foreign trade policy. Consequently, there is no guarantee that we could get a good price this year, the market observers shared their opinions.

The price of black gram (urad) jumped to above K1 million per tonne on 18 May, according to Yangon Region Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Bayintnaung wholesale centre).
Black gram fetched K888,500 per tonne on 1 May, and India’s demand pushed up to K1,069,000 per tonne on 18 May. The figures showed a significant gap of K180,000 per tonne within three weeks.
The sudden upward trend in black gram is attributed to the strong demand by India.
However, the current price has not reached the record price of K1.3 million per tonne registered in late 2019.
Similarly, the price of pigeon peas, which India primarily purchases, also rose to K1,002,500 per tonne.
Myanmar yearly produces about 400,000 tonnes of black gram and 50,000 tonnes of pigeon peas.
Myanmar is the top producing country of black gram that India demands. Besides Myanmar, pigeon peas, green grams and yellow peas are also grown in Australia, and Africa, indicated Myanmar Pulses, Beans and Sesame Seeds Merchants Association.

Following the uncertainty in black bean and pigeon peas markets, the association suggested, in October-end 2020, that the growers cultivate black-eyed bean more.
India’s Central Government has notified the annual quota of black gram (400,000 tonnes) imports for its financial year 2021-2022, which ends on 31 March 2022.—NN/GNLM
