Speaker of the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw Thura U Shwe Mann on Friday refuted reports that journalists have been banned from covering stories from inside parliament.
The speaker made the comment at the work coordination meeting of the central committee and working committee for convening Hluttaw sessions in Nay Pyi Taw on Friday.
The speaker of the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw Thura U Shwe Mann said the meeting was convened to address the failures and weaknesses at Hluttaw sessions and security problems, which are important issues for the Hluttaw, the symbol of democracy.
He said the reports of a news ban were inaccurate, saying journalists are merely not allowed to cover news from the interpreter’s booth.
He added that the Hluttaw has never prohibited interviewing representatives, union ministers or deputy ministers, with the ban on journalists covering news from the interpreter’s booth imposed because a proper location and procedures for interviews are already in place. In conclusion, the speaker urged all to cooperate in accordance with rules and regulations.
Speaker U Khin Aung Myint of the Amyotha Hluttaw later thanked the officials who help in Hluttaw sessions. Afterwards, members of the central committee and the work committee reported on progress of work.
