Chinese demand pushes up price of fresh chilies

Fresh chilies are commanding a high price in the Bayintnaung market on the back of good demand from China, according to U Hla Han from the Seinpanlan chili commodity depot.
The wholesale prices of fresh chilies is currently ranging between K4,700 and K9,000 per viss (1.6kg), depending on the variety.
On 3 June, Indian long chilies were fetching K4,700 per viss, locally produced Indian chilies were priced at K4,300, Wakema chilies at K4,250, and Sinphyukyun chilies at K10,000.
During the same period last year, the price of Indian chilies stood at K3,800, Wakema chilies at K2,600, and Sinphyukyun chilies at K5,500, according to last year’s market data.
This month, Kyaukse, Thetaw, and Wandwin regions have been exporting fresh chilies at K4,000 per viss to China through the border gates. — Khin Sai
