The 2nd National Education Conference for Children with Intellectual Disabilities in Myanmar was jointly organized by the National Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the Myanmar Special Education Association at Myanmar International Convention Center II in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday.
At the afternoon session of this conference, Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Dr Win Myat Aye said to identify and promote the capacities of disabled persons and to ensure their rights. The 2019 Child Law has granted the rights and opportunities for the intellectually disabled children, and their parents or guardians could represent them for promoting their welfares. He also suggested the conference should discuss inclusiveness of intellectually disabled persons, ways for future coordination, equal rights for them, their participation in the communities and no discrimination against diversities.
Union Minister for Education Dr Myo Thein Gyi also said the National Education Law has clearly mentioned the special need education and the inclusive education to prevent any discrimination in learning and to reduce dropout rates. He also said teaching for disabled children is included in the basic education level, and teachers should be trained for this special education, while the Ministry of Education is providing stipend for the disabled children at schools.
Then, Chairman of Myanmar Special Education Association U Htar Oak explained their activities.
During the discussion, officials from Department of Labour, Department of Basic Education, Department of Public Health, Department of Social Welfare and Myanmar Special Education Association held talks on ‘Possible Inclusiveness of Children with Disabilities in Social Community’.—MNA
