With the price of cucumber on the decline, growers from villages near the Kyatmauktaung dam in Kyaukpadaung Township of NyaungU District have reported losses this harvest season.
The villages near Kyatmauktaung usually cultivate seasonal crops as well as a variety of other crops, using underground water, in three seasons. The harvested crops are sold directly in the market and placed in the market through merchants.
“The upper, eastern, and lower villages of Kyatmauktaung dam cultivate vegetables and a variety of crops. Early in the harvest season, the price of one cucumber was K120. Later, the it fell to K30, and growers suffered heavy losses,” said U Tin Tun Aung, a cucumber grower from Legwa village.
“Cucumber cultivation is not easy, and the prevailing price cannot even cover the cultivation cost. Therefore, growers have failed to make a profit,” said U Nay Myo Tun, a cucumber grower from Montgone village. — Ko Htain (Ngathayauk)
