The Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services yesterday honoured the pilot and crew of a Myanmar National Airlines flight for safely landing the passenger jet without its front wheels on Sunday.
A ceremony to confer certificates of honour on Capt. Myat Moe Aung and the airplane crew was held at the Head Office of the Myanmar National Airlines in Yangon yesterday.
At the ceremony, the Commander of Yangon Command, Maj-Gen Thet Pon, presented certificates of honour to them, on behalf of the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services.
“I am a pilot born of the Tatmadaw. I made the best of use of the skills and experience I gained from the Tatmadaw to land the plane. I am extremely delighted to receive the honour from the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services. I promise to continue to do my utmost for the country,” said Capt. Myat Moe Aung at the ceremony.
On the morning of 12 May, Myanmar Airlines flight UB-103, an Embraer 190 model (XY-AGO), carrying 82 passengers and a crew of seven from Yangon to Mandalay, made an emergency landing at the Mandalay International Airport after its front landing gear failed to deploy.
The pilot followed the emergency procedures to deploy the front wheels before deciding to touch down with just the rear wheels.
The decision, control, and leadership he exhibited in a tough situation ensured the safety of the passengers and crew.—Ko Htet (Translated by GNLM)
