Out of 57 hotels and guesthouses suspended because of the outbreak of coronavirus, 52 hotels and guesthouses are resuming their services in line with the guidance of the Ministry of Health and Sports in Sagaing region as of 26 June, said U Aung Thura Oo, the head of the Directorate of the Hotels and Tourism (DHT) in Sagaing region.
“The Ministry of Hotels and Tourism has granted licences to 57 hotels and guesthouses in Sagaing region as of the end of June. Now, about 52 hotels and guesthouses could be reopened in Sagaing region after having the inspection taken,” he said. These 52 hotels and guesthouses are located in Sagaing, Monywa, Shwebo, Kalay, Katha, Homalin, Kani, Indaw and Bamauk townships. “The hotels and guesthouses are being operated following the rules and regulations set by the Ministry of Health and Sports. The resumption of operation of the hotels and guesthouses will enable the hotel staff to get their jobs back,” he added. The tourism sector in Sagaing region has significantly declined because of coronavirus pandemic, he pointed out. “In 2020, more than 23,000 travellers visited Sagaing region in February, over 17,000 travellers in March, 769 travellers in April and 412 travellers in May. With the declining number of travellers, the income of the businesses of the restaurants, drivers and other tourism-related industries has declined, too,” he stressed.—Myo Win Tun (Monywa)(Translated by Hay Mar)
