[dropcap font=”0″]T[/dropcap]HE general election scheduled to be held in late 2015 is significant not just for political parties but also for the people of Myanmar, since the result may dramatically change the country’s political landscape.
One reason why the 2015 vote is so significant for Myanmar is that it stands to be the first election in which almost all political forces in the country will participate. Major opposition parties boycotted the 2010 election and almost all votes were taken by a major party which has dominated the parliament. After the election, we are likely to see more opposition representatives in the parliament.
Another reason is that voters have developed the ability to judge political parties during the last four years.  Both the ruling and opposition parties have shown strengths and weaknesses during the period.
In addition, voters have become well aware of the power of their ballots during the period, while the media will have more experience covering elections. These factors make the general election more exciting than the previous one, and it is likely that voter turnout will be higher.
It is important for everyone eligible to make sure they are included in the voters’ lists released by election sub-commissions for the 2015 general election. The first step for a free and fair election is to ensure all eligible citizens exercise their right to vote.
