Donors urged to take safety measures in flood zones

Following some fatal accidents in flood zones, the government on Thursday urged well-wishers seeking to distribute emergency aid to flood victims to consult local authorities before embarking for disaster areas.
More than four people including two monks died in an accident when a four-wheel vehicle they were on board plunged into floods while moving along a flooded road in Sittway, Rakhine State, Wednesday.
A motorized boat carrying students capsized Monday en route to school due to strong winds in Yekyi Township, Ayeyawady Region, leaving three students dead. The nationwide death toll of the floods that hit the country as from June reached 103, according to an announcement of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement on Thursday.
The disaster affected more than 1.3 million people nationwide.The rising Ayeyawady river threatening to inundate Ayeyawady Region saw their levels drop slightly these days, but they still remained above their designated danger levels, the country’s weather bureau said Thursday.
The floods in recent memory inundated more than 1.2 million acres of rice fields, damaging more than 773,000 acres and destroying more than 515,000 acres, according to an updated figure released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation.So far, more than 123,000 acres have been put under rice, the ministry said.
Continuing rainfall and surging floodwaters increase the risks to children and their families, said UNICEF, in a statement released Thursday.
Flood waters are now inundating the country’s Bago and Ayeyawady regions.
The number of children and families affected by floods continues  to rise with  the total now at 1.1 million people, of which nearly 390,000 are children, the statement said.
More than half of the affected are women, including more than 21,000 pregnant women and over 20,000 lactating women, according to the statement.
