It has been found that eels can survive better if they are raised in natural environments rather than in ponds, according to the Myanmar Fisheries Federation (MFF).
The MFF stated that eels would be more viable if bred in natural settings, based on research findings. The organization continues to carry out research activities to achieve successful breeding results.
The rainy season is when eels spawn and are also caught the most, which risks the extinction of the species. The Myanmar Fisheries Federation is working to provide awareness programmes that include releasing baby eels into natural habitats, implementing natural breeding systems instead of using ponds, and distributing technology to prevent the extinction of fish species.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation is launching initiatives to encourage and promote the production of fish, shrimp, and other aquatic products. It is also holding technical seminars to facilitate collaboration between experts and farmers in developing eel farming. Additionally, the ministry is working to implement policies related to livestock and fishery research successfully.
Last year, Myanmar was able to export about 13,000 tonnes of eel abroad and is prepared to meet foreign demand. The country is making efforts to increase the production of aquatic products in the future. — TWA/MKKS
