Expanding private beekeeping firms flourish as Myanmar honey commands premium prices

Deputy Director U Myo Tint of the Apiculture Division under the Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department said that private beekeeping businesses are expanding this financial year as a tonne of Myanmar honey is valued up to US$3,000 in the foreign market.
Due to the high price, private beekeeping businesses expanded in the current 2023–2024 financial year. There were more than 820 private beekeeping businesses in the 2022–2023 financial year, and over 130 businesses expanded in this financial year, totalling more than 950 private beekeeping businesses in the country.
Currently, the Apiculture Division under the Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department has opened 31 beekeeping stations in 31 townships across the country to operate the beekeeping industry. The development of private beekeeping businesses can be seen due to the support of technologies and pure breeds of queen bees by the department, he continued.
Myanmar’s honey earned market shares in America, Japan, Korea, Canada, and ASEAN countries due to its high quality. A tonne of Myanmar’s honey costs $2,500 to $3,000 on the foreign market, and it is exported abroad up to 3,000 tonnes annually.
