In spite of a thick fog enveloping the Yangon River in early mornings of late, jetties and shipyards are lined with passengers from Dala Township waiting to travel to Yangon for work by ferry. Therefore, Cherry Ferry operators are trying to start operations as soon as visibility increases.
“This morning, we could not see the way clearly because there was fog everywhere. So, we could not run four routes in the early morning and kept our water buses at the jetty. But, we started operations between 8 am and 8.30 am,” said an official from the Cherry Ferry.
“Water vessels also stopped services temporarily from 5:30 am to 8.30 am at 11 jetties in Dala Township. Officials are ensuring vessels do not to leave with passengers from the jetty. If the water vessel passengers do not follow the rules and regulations, the authorities are ready to take action. Warning letters have also been posted at jetties on both Dala and Yangon sides,” said U Kyaw Nyein, chairman of the township water vessels supervision team.
People from Dala, Twantay, Kawhmu, and Kungyangon townships face this problem every year. The fog can become quite thick, especially at the time of the matriculation exam.—Naing Lin Kyaw (Dala) (Translated by Hay Mar)
