Few water vessels under repair at Mandalay Yadanarbon Dockyard

Only a few water vessels are currently under repair at the Mandalay Yadanarbon Dockyard as some vessels have been docked after a drop in the flow of goods. The shipyard is carrying out minor and major renovations to strengthen the vessels.
At the shipyard, maritime transport operators submit requests for repair of water vessels from Inland Water Transport (IWT) to the budget, depending on their use, said U Zaw Win Myint, the Deputy Command Engineer of the shipyard.
“Currently, we are not building any water vessels. We are only servicing water vessels and carrying out minor renovations. We first target how many vessels will be repaired per year depending upon the use of the vessels. Then, we calculate the cost of repairs. The demand for water vessels for transportation has been less,” he added.
From January to September, 2019, the Yadanarbon Dockyard has targeted to repair nine water vessels, including from Patine, Paukton, and Pon Nyar. Currently, two water vessels owned by IWT are being repaired at the Dockyard. “The main income for the department comes from building new vessels. Conducting repairs on vessels earns us only K20,000 per day. And, the repairs can be finished within five days. Yadanarbon Dockyard is a high quality dockyard. There are some privately owned dockyards in Mingun which are carrying out repairs alone on a manageable scale,” he added.
“The IWT is operating 21 motor vessels in Upper Myanmar. All water vessels are required to be repaired at the Yadanarbon Dockyard. Sometimes, the shipyard is hired to repair other privately owned motor vessels or build new ones. Building of new water vessels costs K20 million,” he said. Passenger vessels need to be repaired every two years, while tug have to be repaired every five years at the Yadanarbon Dockyard.—Khin Sat Wai
