A FIRE that broke out in Maha Aungmyay Township, Mandalay, yesterday, destroyed 18 houses, according to the Mandalay Region Fire Department.
This is the second such incident this week, following a fire outbreak in Tagundaing Yannar Ward on Tuesday.
According to an investigation, an individual filling fuel into a bucket near a cooking fire inside a house in Ngan Pyar Yi Su Ward caused the fire, according to the department.
It took firefighters 40 minutes to put out the fire with the use of 76 fire engines accompanied by more than 200 firefighters, including auxiliary fire brigade members, according to the department.
Action is being taken against one Daw Khin Htay Yi, the owner of the house, for negligence. More than 220 fires occurred from January to December, 2015 in Mandalay Region, with 81 in Mandalay itself.  Fires caused by negligence topped the list.
