Fisheries Dept marks golden jubilee in Nay Pyi Taw on 15 March

The MoALI Union Minister makes the speech to mark the golden jubilee of the Fisheries Department yesterday.

The Department of Fisheries commemorated the 50th anniversary (golden jubilee) at the meeting hall of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation on the morning of 15 March 2022.
Present at the meeting were MoALI Union Minister U Tin Htut Oo, Deputy Minister Dr Aung Gyi, permanent secretary, officials concerned and rectors of the universities. Those officials from the region and state departments also virtually attended the event.
The Union minister made a remark to maintain the transboundary species (Hilsa), effectively conduct the conservation of marine resources, promote the market, set the close season for fishing to conserve the sustainable aquaculture and carry out fisheries monitoring, control and surveillance.
Under the State Administration Council, a new department of livestock research was established to support the fish and meat sector. The Fisheries Department and Taninthayi Region Fisheries Federation signed an agreement to establish a research fund in order to improve the research activities and implement the science-based fisheries management, showing the first public-private partnership between the government and private entrepreneurs, he continued.
Myanmar is implementing a Blue Economy initiative that facilitates an ocean-based economy, promotes the sustainable use of resources and does not have the environmental impact while preserving the ecosystem. All the stakeholders must cooperate to develop coherence in businesses without coastal resources degradation and to enrich the coastal resources. Coastal resources management for extraction must be implemented to effectuate the economic growth of the State, he added.
Afterwards, Director-General U Wai Lin Maung of the Fisheries Department made a greeting remark and revealed the video documenta ry of the department’s performance.
Later, the Union minister, the deputy minister and officials presented the state-level agribusiness awards to four talented staff, performance awards and sports awards to the related winners.
The department was established on 15 March 1972 and it has reached the golden jubilee. Myanmar has 8.2 million hectares of inland water (freshwater rivers, creeks, ponds and lakes) and 2,832 kilometres long coastline, with abundant freshwater and saltwater fish resources. Beyond the self-sufficiency, the department is endeavouring to increase the exports and production year over year.
Myanmar’s fisheries export stood at US$853 million in the 2019-2020 financial year and $786 million in the 2020-2021 FY. It has been carrying out the fish adding activities to the rivers, ponds and lakes to increase the fish resource every year. During the 2020-2021 mini-budget, 110 million two-inch fish larvae have been added into rivers and lakes. Moreover, it is providing technical assistance to the breeders to adopt the net-cage fish culture on surface water in the rivers, dams and lakes. — MNA
