Free Independent Tourists (FITs) are more vulnerable to traffic accidents than other tourists who visit Dawei, Taninthayi region, said Dawei region tourist safety police.
An FIT is an individual or small group traveling and vacationing with a self-booked itinerary. They are not members of traditional guided tour nor part of a marketed package. These tourists are more likely to rent local transport. Tourists who visit the region under the arrangement of travel and tour companies are not likely to tour on their own, rent local transport or meet with an accident.
“Our police mostly help FITs with loss of passports and traffic accidents, said Tint Naing Win, an official from Dawei region tourist safety police unit.
A traffic accident occurred in January 2017 and in 2016, five cases of accident occurred. All the cases involved FITs.
“We issued letters of instruction to hotels and guest houses to hire the motorbikes only to those holding international and local driving licenses,” said an official from Dawei town hotel and tourism department.
The Dawei tourism safety police unit was formed in March 2015. Currently, four policemen patrol daily in the downtown area and twice a week in areas outside the city.
