Five Myanmar’s export beans hit three-year high

On 4 August, the black bean FAQ/RC was priced at K1,645,500 per tonne in the Yangon market while K1,905,500 per tonne of SQ/RC and K1,580,000 per tonne of pigeon pea. The price of mung bean (Pakokku) was K2,550-K2,850 per tonne, Kayan Shwewah (special) at K2,665-2,750 and chickpea at K3,450-3,500.
The black bean price does not change and the pigeon pea price rises to K80,000 per tonne within one week.
On 4 August 2021, the black bean FAQ/RC was K1,245,000 per tonne while K1,460,000 per tonne of SQ/RC, K1,175,000 per tonne of pigeon pea Red/RC. The price of mung bean (Pakokku) was K1,615-K1,735 per viss while mung bean (Kayan Shwewah) at K2,080-K2,170 and chickpea at K2,200-K2,250.
On 4 August 2020, the black bean FAQ/RC was K948,000 per tonne while K1,078,000 per tonne of SQ/RC, and K805,000 per tonne of pigeon pea Red/RC. The price of mung bean (Pakokku) was K1,865-K1,920 per viss while mung bean (Kayan Shwewah) at K2,100-K2,170 and chickpea at K1,700-K1,800.
On 4 August 2022, the prices of black bean, pigeon pea, mung bean and chickpea are drastically higher compared to the same period of the last two years. The export of black bean, pigeon pea, mung bean and chickpea fetch good prices and the bean farmers reap good profits and the country also earns foreign income.
The price of black beans on 4 August 2022 is about K400,000 higher than in 2021 and K700,000 than in 2020.
The price of pigeon pea on 4 August 2022 is around K400,000 higher than in 2021 and K700,000 than in 2020.
The price of mung bean on 4 August 2022 is about K500,000 higher than in 2021 and K400,000 than in 2020.
The price of chickpea on 4 August 2022 is over K700,000 higher than in 2021 and K1 million than in 2020.
The country grows 19 types of beans and pulses on 11 million acres of land with 66 per cent of black bean, pigeon pea and mung bean plantations. In the 2016-2017FY, the country exported one million tonnes of black bean, pigeon pea and mung bean (over $700 million). About 77 per cent of beans and pulses exported are black beans and shipped to India.
Ninety per cent of pigeon pea export and eight per cent of mung beans are also exported to India. During over 30 years of Myanmar-India bean trade, the country received a quota of 250,000 tonnes of black bean export and 100,000 tonnes of pigeon pea in five years (2021-2026).
As the country can export beans to the Indian market in five years, so the local bean farmers can get higher bean prices.—– TWA/GNLM
