Foreign Minister to clarify foreign policy

DASSK (GNLM အတြက္) 72Union Foreign Minister Daw Aung San Suu Kyi will clarify her government’s foreign policy in a meeting with foreign diplomats at her office in Nay Pyi Taw on April 22, according to an official.
Deputy Director-General U Ko Ko Shein of the Political Department said yesterday that invitations have been sent to 93 foreign embassies at home and abroad, including a UN agency.
So far 73 embassies have accepted the invitation, with the deputy director general adding that ambassadors or senior diplomats will attend the event.
The government’s foreign policy is oriented to the protection of national interests, security, economic development, justice, stability and environmental sustainability, the official said, adding that the policy also holds in high esteem such virtues as freedom, sovereignty, culture and tradition and national solidarity.
There has been a dramatic shift of emphasis in the country’s foreign policy from ‘bilateral relations’ to ‘regional integration’ and ‘multilateralism’.
According to the constitution, the country practices independent, active and non-aligned foreign policy alongside the five principles of peaceful coexistence. These principles include mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, mutual non-aggression, non-interference in each other’s internal affairs, equality and mutual benefit, and peaceful coexistence.
The new government’s foreign policy is aimed at enabling cooperation with neighbouring countries in an effort to maintain peace, regionally and globally, the official quoted the union foreign minister as saying. —Myanmar News Agency
