Garlic price rises because of high demand in local market

The price of garlic (Kyukok) has increased within a week in the local market because of the high demand by the local consumers, according to the online and offline garlic markets.
Based on their size and quality, the prices of garlic (Kyukok) vary from K2,650 to K2,750 per viss (3.6 pounds) in the local market. The garlic price has increased by K250 per viss in a week.
Garlic is a commonly bought kitchen crop and a popular ingredient in cooking because of its strong smell and delicious taste. The crop is also used in making traditional medicines.
Garlic is mostly cultivated in Shan State and the Salin, Pwintphyu, Yenangyaung and Pakokku towns in Magway Region.
Also, the price of the online market is a bit stable these days. The price is not rising in the wholesale market because the onion is highly supplied to the market. In the retail market, the price of onion is ranging between K2,000 and K3,500 per viss. The price of onion has reached between K650 and K1,000 per viss in the Bayintnaung wholesale market.
In the 2017-2018 financial year, Myanmar earned over US$9 million from the export of 22,000 tonnes of onion. Myanmar also earned over $20 million from the export of 87,000 tonnes of onion in the 2018-2019FY. Myanmar has exported onion mostly to China, Thailand, India and Bangladesh.
The onion is grown mostly in Monywa, Myingyan, Taungtha, Pakokku, Kyaukse, Mandalay and Magway. —Aye Cho/GNLM
