Golden Syrup in the Sun: Illuminating Our School’s Essence

During my recent observation, I came across important information regarding the upcoming academic year, specifically the enrolment week scheduled from 23 to 31 May for the 2023-2024 academic year. It is a pivotal time as basic education schools are preparing to reopen in June, eagerly welcoming students for another year of learning. The government has introduced the KG+9 scheme, which focuses on middle school-level education, aiming to enhance the overall learning experience for all citizens. This initiative plays a significant role in both state-building and sustainable learning, as knowledge is not only empowering but also serves as the fundamental stepping stone for children and youth as they enter the knowledge society. As a popular saying in Myanmar goes, wisdom, bravery, and knowledge are intertwined, emphasizing the value of these qualities.
Undoubtedly, knowledge holds immense importance in life. It serves as a catalyst for personal growth and development, allowing individuals to overcome challenges and seize opportunities. Additionally, knowledge acts as a powerful tool in shaping a person’s understanding of the world and equips them to make informed decisions.
Furthermore, I would like to highlight the MDG-2, which stands for achieving universal primary education. This ambitious goal was set at the turn of the century, aiming to ensure that every child, regardless of their gender, receives a comprehensive primary school education by 2015. The progress towards this crucial objective is measured by assessing various factors, including enrollment rates in primary education, completion rates of the educational process, and literacy levels among individuals aged 15 to 24. By striving towards universal primary education, we not only empower children with knowledge but also pave the way for poverty reduction and overall societal development.
In my recollection of the 2021-2022 academic year, the government had made arrangements for the enrolment of students in basic education. However, this period was marred by unfortunate incidents orchestrated by the followers of the NUG terrorist group. Primary schools became targets of their attacks, leading to the tragic loss of many teachers who dedicated their lives to education. This created a climate of fear and uncertainty among students, who were eager to learn but felt apprehensive about wearing their school uniforms.
I vividly remember an incident that occurred in my own neighbourhood. My daughter’s school was just a short 10 to 15-minute walk from our house. To ensure her safety, we adopted the practice of carrying her school uniform separately and changing it at the school gate. This was a precautionary measure in response to the threats posed by the NUG terrorist group. Their despicable actions included issuing warnings to discourage school attendance and inflicting social punishments on those who dared to continue their education. It was truly disheartening to witness such a foolish and undignified reaction from the NUG’s PDF.
Education is a fundamental right and an essential building block for the future of any nation. It is a source of empowerment and a pathway towards personal and societal development. The attempts made by the NUG terrorist group to disrupt the education system and instil fear among students are not only senseless but also a gross violation of basic human rights.
In the face of such adversity, it is crucial for communities, educators, and government authorities to unite in safeguarding the right to education. By standing strong against the attempts to undermine our educational institutions, we can demonstrate resilience and send a powerful message that we will not succumb to fear and intimidation.
Let us strive to create an environment where every child can pursue their education without fear, where teachers can impart knowledge without threat, and where future generations can flourish and contribute positively to society. Together, we can overcome these challenges and build a brighter and more inclusive educational landscape for all.
I completely share your frustration and concern when it comes to acts of violence targeting individuals who advocate for education, such as the heartbreaking incident involving Malala Yousafzai. Malala’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of education and the lengths some individuals will go to silence those who seek it. It is a stark reminder that we must continue to champion education as a fundamental human right and work tirelessly to ensure that every person, regardless of gender or background, has access to quality education in a safe and nurturing environment.
Similarly, in Myanmar, there have been reports of teachers being targeted by followers of the NUG in various regions, including North Okkalapa in Yangon, Tamu in Chin State, Ye in Mon State, Yedashe in Pegu Division, and others. These acts of violence bear similarities to the actions of extremist groups like the Islamic State (IS).
Education should be a fundamental right accessible to all individuals without fear or intimidation. It is through education that societies can progress, empower their citizens, and foster a better future. Acts of violence that hinder or discourage education are not only morally wrong but also impede the development of individuals and communities.
It is important for governments, communities, and international organizations to work together to ensure the safety and protection of educators, students, and educational institutions. By promoting a culture of peace, tolerance, and respect for education, we can create an environment where everyone has the opportunity to learn and grow.
Let us continue to stand against violence, extremism, and any attempts to undermine the importance of education. Together, we can strive for a world where education is valued, protected, and cherished as a vital tool for personal and societal advancement.
