The Green Gold co-operative exported more than 40 tonnes of coffee beans to Belgium in the third batch.
The co-operative comprising member growers from Loilem and Hopong townships in southern Shan State conveyed 40.2 tonnes of coffee beans (60 kilogrammes per bag) to Belgium for the third time.
The Green Gold co-operative has shipped a total of 120.6 tonnes of coffee to foreign trade partners.
Myanmar’s coffee is sent to the US, England, European countries and Asian countries. Myanmar delivers it to the US, Canada, EU, Japan and the Republic of Korea through maritime trade, while it is exported to neighbouring China and Thailand via the border.
Commercially valued coffee beans are mostly produced by Shan State. The coffee beans from PyinOoLwin, Ywangan, Kengtung and Kalaw areas are conveyed to Thailand via the Tachilek border after obtaining an export licence, QR code (transport permit), Export Declaration, the Ministry of Commerce stated.
Myanmar has started to export coffee beans to Thailand via Tachilek from the 2014-2015 financial year. About 161 tonnes worth US$0.22 million were delivered in the 2022-2023 FY.
Myanmar shipped 17 tonnes of coffee worth $0.042 million in the second week of July in the 2023-2024 FY. The coffee bean fetches 140-160 Thai baht per kg.
The Thailand market accounts for 75 per cent of Myanmar’s coffee production, earning K15-17 million per tonne.
Myanmar’s coffee plantations are found in Mandalay Region, Shan State and Kayin State. It is harvested between December and March and exported to external markets during the April-May period. There are over 50,000 acres of coffee plantations across the country. — NN/EM
