A ceremony to commemorate World Heart Day 2019 and commencement of preventive works on heart and cardiovascular disease was held at Ministry of Health and Sports, Nay Pyi Taw yesterday morning.
In addressing the event Union Minister for Health Dr Myint Htwe spoke of the importance of preventive works and treatments on heart and cardiovascular diseases as the number of such non-contagious disease occurring were rising. The importance of the public’s knowledge on health was also mentioned. The Union Minister also commented on drawing up a framework system and implementing it systematically with the participation of related departments, organizations, non-government organizations, civil society organizations and traditional health groups to effectively conduct preventive works on heart and cardiovascular diseases in states/regions, townships and rural regions.
The Union Minister also said the ministry was following the suggestion of the World Health Organization to its member countries on monitoring cigarette and tobacco policy, danger to the public of second-hand smoking, assistant to those who want to quit smoking, a total ban of advertisement on smoking and cigarettes and raising tax on tobacco and cigarettes.
Next, HelpAge International (Myanmar) Technical Lead Professor Anil Krishna delivered a message of greeting. This was followed by Yangon General Hospital University of Medicine 1 cardiac department head professor Dr Nwe Nwe and Department of Public Health director Dr Kyaw Kan Kaung explaining about preventive guide against heart and cardiovascular diseases and future work programs.
Afterward, Union Minister Dr Myint Htwe, Deputy Minister Dr Mya Lay Sein and officials inspected the exhibits shown at the small commemorative exhibition. —MNA
