HONG KONG  — Hong Kong media mogul Jimmy Lai walked free from a criminal intimidation trial Thursday as the court ruled in his favor against a reporter of a rival newspaper.

Lai, an outspoken China critic and owner of Next Digital Ltd., which publishes the Apple Daily, was found not guilty of bullying a reporter of rival newspaper Oriental Daily during a demonstration in 2017.

The reporter, whose identity was concealed in court, had accused Lai of cursing at him, uttering threats and causing him to fear for his own safety following the confrontation, the court has heard.

Magistrate May Chung said in the ruling that the reporter was not an “honest and reliable” witness as he was “evasive” when cross-examined, and the reporter’s smiles following the confrontation made his “fear” claims unconvincing.–Kyodo
