The Union Election Commission led by its Chairperson U Hla Thein and officials with the commission and the Ministry of Information led by Union Minister Dr Pe Myint, Deputy Minister U Aung Hla Tun and officials with the ministry met at the UEC office in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday.
At the meeting, UEC Chair U Hla Thein first said that the 2020 general elections will be held per five norms prescribed. UEC would require a lot of cooperation from MoI for the pre-, during- and post-election periods. MoI needs to take a leading role in conducting civic and voter education tasks. MoI also needs to help print the ballots that will be used in the 2020 general elections. MoI should scrutinize the internal and external news media to gather news and information on the elections day.
“UEC is cooperating with the Press Council to revise the electoral guideline and will issue it shortly. We’re also collaborating with the Press Council and the Facebook Team to stop the circulation of false rumours and hate speeches on social media. Regarding civic and voter education, a UEC Facebook page will also be uploaded soon,” added the UEC chairperson.
Afterwards, Union Minister Dr Pe Myint briefed on the work already undertaken and the work agenda to be performed.
“We’re planning to get the election awareness, education, and information programmes be broadcast and printed in the State-owned news media. Township Information and Public Relations Department (IPRD) offices will be used as information centres to carry out civic and voter education,” he said.
UEC members and the director-general then made additional discussions on the work programme raised by the MoI officials. After this, the Union Elections Commission Chair concluded the meeting.—MNA (Translated by Aungthu Ya)
