Japanese-origin white sesame opens market with high price

Japanese white sesame is abundantly entering the Mandalay market from various regions. This sesame seed variety was taken from Japan 10 years ago and named Japanese white sesame.

The white sesame of Japanese origin is lately flowing into the Mandalay market with high prices and the trade is bustling as well, said sesame traders in Mandalay city.
Japanese white sesame is mainly supplied from Monywa, Myinmu, Myaung and Kyaukse townships. The price surges to K203,000 per three-basket bag from K165,000 recorded in early May. The figures show a significant increase within a month, said U Soe Win Myint, an owner of Soe Win Myint Commodity Depot in Mandalay city.
“Japanese white sesame is abundantly entering the Mandalay market from various regions. This sesame seed variety was taken from Japan 10 years ago and named Japanese white sesame. It is whiter than normal white sesame and the sesame seeds are thicker. It is more marketable as well. Out of sesame varieties (white sesame, yellow sesame, brown sesame, black sesame and Japanese white sesame and black sesame (Samone variety) are highly demanded in the market. China purchases all the supply of Japanese white sesame. It was also shipped to Japan in the past years. It is cultivated under irrigation networks in summer. The sesame seeds from Salin and Sinbyukyun areas are soon to flow into the market,” he elaborated.  That sesame variety can be cultivated throughout the year. It can be harvested after 100 days of cultivation. It is a commercially valued product of Myanmar. The sesame is commonly cultivated in Mandalay, Magway and Sagaing regions.
