Kalay fire damage bill already surpasses 2014 total

As of May, Kalay in Sagaing Region has recorded five cases of fire this year, with the damage bill already higher than last year’s total, according to the Fire Services Department.
Local people suffered losses worth roughly K500,000 in four fires in 2014. This year, five separate fires have caused damage in excess of K1.5 million. “Some vendors sell fuel along roadsides in Kalay and do not abide by the rules of the Fire Services Department,” a local resident said. “They do not keep fire extinguishers at the shops. In fact, the authorities should not allow any fuel station in downtown Kalay.”
Staff Officer U Phone Er of Kalay District FSD said, “Most of the outbreaks of fire were based on negligent acts of users. Moreover, they have made poor attempts at following the regulations of the Fire Services Department.”
Fire stations in Kalay Township have received 15 fire trucks to bolster firefighting capacity. Personnel of FSD and firefighters are working hard in disseminating knowledge about fire prevention measures to local residents.–Shin Nay Min
