KfW provides 5 mln EUR grant funds for Improvement of Agricultural Transport Infrastructure

Director General U Khin Thet, Ministry of Construction and Ms. Eva Schneider, KfW Country Director to Myanmar signed the Financing and Separate Agreements for the Improvement of Agricultural Transport Infrastructure (IATI Programme). The signing ceremony was witnessed by U Han Zaw, Union Minister for the Construction.
Germany is the first partner of Myanmar to support a programme of rural roads construction. So far, the German Government has supported Myanmar with EUR 47 million grant funds to develop rural areas by upgrading and constructing rural roads and bridges. In addition to that German Government has committed EUR 5 million for the improvement of the agricultural sector. At the occasion of the Agreements’ signing Ms. Eva Schneider, Country Director of KfW Office Yangon, emphasized in her speech: “By making roads and bridges accessible all year long, the population living close to the roads can travel faster and easily to markets to sell their agricultural products. Their income will be rising and the living conditions will improve significantly” The programme will be implemented within the framework of German Financial Cooperation via KfW Development Bank by the Department of Rural Roads Development (DRRD) of the Ministry of Construction. The programme comprises upgrading of the rural roads for the improvement of agricultural products in Southern Shan State.
