The prices of kitchen crops such as onion, garlic, chilli, potato and spices are rising in the Yangon market, according to trade data released by Yangon Bayintnaung Wholesale Centre.
The price of onion was up by K100 per viss (a viss equals 1.6 kg) in the wholesale market, ranging between K375 and K475 per viss, while the price of garlic also increased to K1,350 to K1,950 per viss, with a gap of K100-150 within three weeks. Quality garlic (Kyukok variety) dramatically surged to K2,900 on 23 June, with a sharp increase of K1,000, Bayintnaung market’s data indicated.
The price of chilli also showed an increase of K100-300 per viss depending on quality. Similarly, the prices of potato and other spices also indicated a gap of K100 per viss within a week.
The consumer price spiked in food, non-food, household goods and maintenance, rent, transportation, recreation and culture and the CPI fell in other commodities, tobacco and beverages and clothing groups. The price index of education, health and telecommunication went stable amid the COVID-19.
To reduce the inflation rate, the concerned authorities have been making efforts based on policies on finance, currency, trade, and foreign currency control. — GNLM
