Union Minister U Hla Tun highlights report of Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA).

A coordination meeting was held here on Tuesday by the committee responsible for implementing the investigative report on the Letpadaung copper mine project, according  to officials.
Union Minister U Hla Tun at President Office quoted the investigation commission as suggesting that the copper mine project must continue as a national project, saying that the committee has implemented 37 of 42 points suggested by the investigative commission in its report.
The five remaining points require close supervision in the monitoring and evaluation process throughout the project, the union minister said, adding that the report of Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) has gained approval from the Union government and that it will be streamed over the internet for public observation.
An independent monitoring team (IMT) will carry out supervision to ensure that the copper project follows the ESIA report to the letter, with the union minister saying that steps will be taken to receive certification from International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
He urged officials to speed up vocational training courses for local people to secure jobs and convince them that the project will benefit them and contribute to the development of their region. The union minister was briefed on security measures in the project area, removal and reconstruction of religious edifices, and environmental conservation activities.
