The opening ceremony of the Lisu Traditional New Year Festival was held in the Lisu literature and culture committee’s field, Putao Town, Kachin State, yesterday morning.
Union Minister for the Office of the State Counsellor U Kyaw Tint Swe; Speaker of Kachin State Hluttaw U Tun Tin; Minister for Finance and Revenue U Wai Lin; Kachin State Government Minister for Resources and Mines U H-la Aung; and Chairman of Putao Township Lisu Literature and Culture Committee U Wasar cut the ribbon during the opening ceremony.
“I am glad to attend the Lisu Traditional New Year Festival, which is being celebrated in Putao, Kachin State,” said U Kyaw Tint Swe.
“Putao is situated in the northern part of Myanmar, which is full of icy mountains. It is said that Lisu literature was invented using the Roman alphabet since 1918, and it was included in the list of world literatures as well. The curriculum for Lisu literature is taught in schools.
“It is essential to maintain this traditional heritage and literature to develop each generation. We can see that Putao is likely to be a tourist destination in Myanmar,” noted U Kyaw Tint Swe.
“The government is making concerted efforts to use the Myitkyina-Putao Road throughout the year. The new year festival is a special occasion, and I am sure this festival will be an unforgettable moment for us. As the Bible says, ‘Love one another because love throws a veil over a multitude of faults.’ “May each one of you attain calmness, success and happiness this new year,” he said.
Next, Prof. Dr. Khin Saw Nwe (History) read out the history of Lisu, and Speaker of Kachin State Hluttaw U Tun Tin expressed his thanks. Later, all the participants joined in the Lisu traditional dance.
