About 200 tonnes of honey is produced annually by private beekeeping businesses in Magway Region, according to the Beekeeping Development Division of the Magway Region Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department.
There are reportedly more than 70 private beekeepers in Magway Region and more than 12,000 beehives. Most of the beekeeping is conducted in Salin, Pwintbyu, Magway, Yenangyaung, Chauk, Natmauk, and Minbu townships.
“Our department provides beekeepers with beekeeping and maintenance services, bee diseases prevention and treatment, and honey production with technical assistance training,” said staff officer of the Magway Region Beekeeping Development Division U Kyaw Htay.
The Division aims to spread beekeeping skills to the people, increase more employment opportunities for the rural people who grow crops, and develop socio-economic life.
“Our beekeeping business produces over 10 tonnes of honey annually. This business is economically viable,” said beekeeper U Aung Min.
“We now sell farmed honey as a raw material. We hope to be able to sell it as a value-added product for more business convenience. We are working for this and we need the government help,” he added.— Aung Min Han (MNA)/GNLM
