According to the Ministry of Labour, only individuals holding construction skills certificates issued by the Malaysian government will be permitted to work at construction sites in Malaysia.
From 1 January 2025, work permits will be granted to foreign workers, including those from Myanmar, to work on construction sites in Malaysia. Foreign workers must possess SKKP and SICW certificates recognized by the Malaysian government, as outlined in a letter sent to the Myanmar Embassy to Malaysia.
The construction skills assessment will cost between 750 and 850 Malaysian ringgits, depending on the type. The notification further states that anyone found working without a valid construction skills certificate and a site safety training completion certificate will face legal action.
Currently, the Malaysian government has temporarily suspended the recruitment of foreign workers, including those from Myanmar, from 1 June. It is expected that recruitment will resume by the end of the year. — TWA/TKO
